Services & service guidance

Solar panel cleaning and maintenance options.

Understand the difference between a routine clean, commercial array care, bird exclusion and technical inspection. Ask the provider to confirm the actual scope before booking.

01 · Residential cleaning

Rooftop solar cleaning for homes

Residential cleaning focuses on removing suitable surface buildup from solar glass while respecting manufacturer instructions and safe roof-access practices. The method should be appropriate for the panel, roof pitch, water quality and level of soiling.

Good questions to ask

  • Is the roof safely accessible, and what happens if it is not?
  • What water and brush system will be used?
  • Are mineral deposits or bird droppings included?
  • Will the provider document any visible damage noticed before work?

See cleaning package considerations to understand the factors that can change an estimate.

02 · Commercial & industrial

Cleaning for larger arrays and business sites

Commercial projects may involve access coordination, operational constraints, larger panel counts, site-specific safety rules and scheduling around business activity. A site review may be needed before a firm quote is possible.

Ask for a written scope describing the array sections included, access arrangements, water supply, site induction needs, waste handling and completion checks. For industrial or ground-mounted arrays, confirm whether the provider has equipment and procedures suited to that environment.

03 · Bird proofing & debris

Address bird activity beneath panels carefully

Birds may nest beneath arrays and leave droppings or nesting debris. Depending on the site, the appropriate scope may include debris removal, sanitation, inspection of the affected area and installation of compatible exclusion mesh or guards.

Confirm that the provider uses humane, lawful methods and that any guards are compatible with the roof and solar system. Ask whether removal, cleanup and installation are separate line items, and whether any existing wiring or roof damage requires a specialist.

Bird-proofing is not automatically part of a standard panel wash; get the exact inclusions in writing.

04 · Inspection & thermal imaging

Cleaning is not the same as diagnosing a system fault

A cleaning visit may identify visible concerns, but it does not automatically include electrical testing, thermal imaging, inverter diagnostics or repair. If monitoring shows unexplained production loss, ask a qualified solar technician to assess the system.

Thermal imaging can be useful in some inspection contexts when performed with suitable equipment and expertise. Confirm the purpose, report format, qualifications and price separately; do not assume it is included in a cleaning package.

  • Ask what the inspection can and cannot establish
  • Confirm whether electrical work is excluded
  • Request findings and recommended next steps in writing
